About Speaking up

As an organised group of parents of Dyspraxic children we were one of many groups
consulted by the NHS for the services shake up in the North West and also
by Oldham MBC on Every Child Matters (connectivity of services).

And specifically FDK were consulted by the QEST Team at Limeside about
the Dyspraxia leaflet to be sent out by the LEA to schools in the borough.

Currently we are part of an ongoing dialogue between families affected by Dyspraxia
and the Childrens Workforce Development Council to help them improve
training for all those who work with children in any way (not teachers).

       consultion meetings

When ever we as a group are consulted by organisations, whether they come to us
or we go to them, we always convey the views and experiences of our members
as well as our own individually. So if you want to raise an issue or a concern but can't
get to the venue or meeting, tell us what you want to say and whoever we
send to the meeting will say it for you.

The more fdk members share their concerns and experiences (both positive and negative)
the better able we are to give people in power a more full and accurate picture
as to what is really happening with Dyspraxic children and their families.

Parent Forum

At least two representatives of FDK always go along to the Parent Forum run by Julie Sweeting,
manager of the AEN Service. This Forum started in 2004 as a vehicle for
Oldham AEN Services to consult with parents of children with any kind of
Additional Educational Need (not just Dyspraxia).

The handbook 'who is who in Oldham SEN' was produced by Julie Sweeting as a direct
response to input she elicited from parents at this Forum. As too was the
AEN section on Oldham Council's website.

If your child lives in Oldham Borough and has any kind of Additional Educational Need at all
this Forum is an opportunity to air your views and also learn a thing or two.
